PETA asks Nordstrom chain to stop selling garments made from animal hides

New York, Dec 5 (efe-epa).- The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization on Thursday staged a "bloody" protest in front of a Nordstrom luxury department store in New York City during which they exhorted the chain to stop selling Canada Goose brand jackets made with the hides and fur of animals.

A group of animal rights activists gathered in front of one of the chain's women's clothing stores where they pretended to be animals who were bleeding to death after having their skins removed to be used for fashion garments.

Meanwhile, a video was shown at the site depicting the agony of coyotes who had been skinned alive and how these animals and raccoons were trapped in their habitats for use in providing hides for Canada Goose, PETA associate director Ashley Byme told EFE.

She said that the animals suffer for days and don't deserve that fate, while other demonstrators shouted slogans calling for New York to be leather-free and displaying signs with messages saying coyotes were suffering for Canada Goose, being trapped and terrorized, and declaring the clothing firm's cruelty.

The protest, Byme said, was to demand that Nordstrom stop selling leather and fur goods, especially Canada Goose products, adding that "millions" of animals are killed each year for their hides.

According to PETA, Canada Goose jackets are made with the skins of wild coyotes trapped in their habitats, which are then shot, beaten to death or otherwise violently killed.

The organizations says that it is common practice among the people tasked with killing ducks and geese used by the firm to cut the birds' throats while alive and then submerge them in tanks of hot water to remove their feathers.

Byme told EFE that they sent Nordstrom's a report PETA published recently, along with a video, about the cruelty with which the animals are allegedly treated on Russian farms that raise them for their skins, which are sold to Canada Goose and other garment manufacturers.

The study found that rabbits are hit on the head with pipes or decapitated while alive and chinchillas cry out in agony while they are subjected to prolonged and painful electrocution, PETA said.

Nordstrom told the press that it does not care and will not stop selling leather products, the activist said, noting that many fashion designers and big stores have stopped using or selling skins and fur products and that there are many alternatives to leather and fur that can be used in the making of garments.

She mentioned big stores like Macy's and Bloomingdale's, along with fashion houses like Gucci and Prada, saying that they had stopped dealing in animal-skin products, adding that thus Nordstrom is behind the times.

The list of fashion firms who have said they will not use animal skins any longer is growing and now includes Miu Miu, Car Shoe, Church's, Versace, Armani, Gucci, Michael Kors, John Galliano, Donna Karan, Furla, Burberry, Jean Paul Gaultier and Hugo Boss, among others.

The PETA spokesperson lamented the fact that no legal action can be taken to stop this cruelty to animals because buying and selling animal skin and fur products is legal and the only thing that can be done is to continue the campaigns to raise awareness among consumers not to buy garments made with animal skins.
