Trump denies raping woman in 1990s

Washington, Jun 25 (efe-epa).- President Donald Trump has denied allegations that he raped E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s, saying in an interview published Tuesday that the writer was "not my type."

Washington, Jun 25 (efe-epa).- President Donald Trump has denied allegations that he raped E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s, saying in an interview published Tuesday that the writer was "not my type."

The 75-year-old Carroll alleged in a series of interviews that she granted since last Friday that Trump approached her in a store in the mid-1990s, joked with her and then cornered her in a dressing room and raped her.

Carroll is "totally lying," the 73-year-old Trump told The Hill, adding that he did not "know anything about her."

The president said "it's just a terrible thing that people can make statements like that."

Carroll writes in her soon-to-be-released book that she ran into Trump at New York City's upscale Bergdorf Goodman department store in the fall of 1995 or the spring 1996.

The writer alleges that she and the New York real estate mogul "just went at it" when he cornered her in the dressing room, adding that she tried to fight him off.

Carroll said Trump "pulled down my tights, and it was a fight."

Trump, who has faced allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct in the past, said the incident never happened.

"I'll say it with great respect: Number one, she's not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, OK?" the president told The Hill during the interview in the Oval Office.

Carroll told CNN that Trump always denies allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct, adding that "I love that I'm not his type."

"He denies, he turns it around, he threatens and he attacks," Carroll told the network.

Since launching his presidential campaign in 2015, about 20 women have alleged that Trump engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with them over a period spanning several decades.

In a tape released shortly before his November 2016 electoral victory, Trump is heard boasting on the "Access Hollywood" set in 2005 that he groped women without their consent.

"When you're a star, they let you do it ... You can do anything," Trump said.

The president has denied all the allegations and the White House contends that the women lied about their interactions with Trump.

Carroll, an advice columnist for Elle magazine, said she waited until now to level the allegations against Trump because she feared losing her job, acknowledging that she acted like "a coward."

The writer said she did not plan to file a criminal complaint against Trump.
